The Hague: city of International Justice

icon walking icon walking

In 1899 the Russian Tsar Nicolas II organized, together with the Dutch queen Wilhelmina, an international peace conference in The Hague. After this conference, there was a desire to have a fixed place to settle issues between countries. And so, the Peace Palace was realized in 1913. Today it houses the International Court of Justice (which is the principal judicial body of the United Nations), the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Hague Academy of International Law and the Peace Palace library which is one of the largest international law libraries in the world. In addition to these bodies, institutions such as the Yugoslavia Tribunal and the International Court of Criminal Justice are housed in The Hague.

Your guide will show you these locations and tell you all about these international institutions.
