Zaanse Schans
Thinking about Holland you might probably picture windmills and clogs. One of the oldest industrial areas in the low-lying countryside was situated along the river Zaan. More than 700 windmills were used to process oil, pigment, spice, flour and saw wooden planks for shipbuilding. In order to preserve the windmills, some are still operated by professional millers in the open-air museum, Zaanse Schans. It is a picturesque area with typical local houses with green wooden gables. And of course, there is a demonstration on how to make clogs. And don’t forget to taste the Gouda cheese at the local farm! Let your guide show you around the area.
If you have your own coach, your guide can also show you the interesting surroundings of the Zaanse Schans. A combination with Edam, Marken or Volendam is possible.
